What we do?

The cornerstone of the Heartwell Foundation is to deliver a quality physical education and rehabilitation service to special needs individuals and groups within the community.

At Heartwell we have an unshakeable faith in the value of exercise, motor skill development and long term activity in the lives of all Australians. This is even more important to those children with special physical, emotional and cognitive needs.

The Heartwell Foundation has its roots in the commitment of co-founders Julienne Espenschied and Scott Taylor, both experienced and skilled physical educators, wishing to redress issues of inequality in health care and service provision for individuals with special needs.

After many years offering our expertise as consultants to the Transport Accident Commission implementing programs for children and adults injured in road accidents, we became acutely aware of just how many children had similar needs to road accident victims. However, without insurance cover or compensation for their disabilities, these non-compensable children and their families have little support in accessing much needed and expensive services.

And so based on our TAC model, we established the Heartwell Foundation to provide needing children with the opportunity to access professional programs designed to develop fundamental sports skills, fitness components and foster long term community inclusion.

The Foundation’s motto of “creating a level playing field” emphasises this commitment.

In the years since inception Heartwell has raised over $3,000,000 to bring its passion and desire for sound physical education to thousands of Victorian children who have been referred for help.

Our work goes on to ensure that many more children can be helped in the future.
