Heartwell Celebrates 15 years

We recently celebrated the 15th year of our Disability Program helping children with special needs develop their health, fitness and motor skills.  What a journey it has been!

Since inception we have had hundreds and hundreds of children involved in our various programs and are very proud of this achievement.   Despite tough economic times and shrinking corporate and philanthropic support we at Heartwell are very positive about our future.

We have met some truly amazing children and their families over the past decade and a half and had some tremendous support from Heartwell ‘friends’ who have donated much needed funding and sponsorship.   The walls of our gym are festooned with photos of kids from diverse backgrounds and with varying levels of need.  Each one is very special to us in so many ways. It’s both satisfying and sad to look at their faces in moments of reflection as we remember what they were like, think about what they may be doing now or ponder on some who are no longer with us.

We feel so very privileged to have established Heartwell and have assisted children in their rehabilitation and movement education.  Our faith in the value of sound physical education for all children and especially those with additional needs remains unshakeable.   We know the road ahead will continue to be a rocky one and as always we are never certain how much funding we will have from year to year.  Nevertheless, we are eternally optimistic and remain totally committed to the Heartwell philosophy of ‘creating a level playing field’.

To all who have supported us so far in our journey, we thank you sincerely.  To fellow Board members John and Gary, thank you for all your insight, understanding and support.

To my partner Julienne, thank you for your vision and being there every step of the way; and finally, to the 100’s of Heartwell families, thank you for letting us into your lives and for allowing us the honour of working with your amazing children.   They have taught us all a lot about ourselves and the power of the human spirit.
