Viv gets 60,000 between lunch and tea!

In the pantheon of cricket gods they don’t come much higher

than Sir Isaac Alexander Vivian Richards.

Known world wide as simply Viv or ‘Smokin Joe’, Richards was a childhood

hero of mine, as he was I’m sure to thousands of cricketing fans around the

world in the 70’s and 80’s.

What a thrill it was then to attend a fantastic sportsman’s

lunch in November conducted by the Irvine Club and to not only meet the great

man and to also be the recipient of funds raised on the day.

The Irvine Club was established by a group of sports mad

businessmen who wanted to form a great network with like minded gentlemen as

well as raise much needed funds for children’s charities.  The November luncheon hosted by Aussie speed

demon Rodney Hogg and with Viv as the special guest sold out within days.  This meant that over 500 people were regaled

by some great cricketing stories and were able to bid on some tremendous

auction items with all proceeds going to Heartwell.

Great friend of Heartwell, Peter

Schwab spoke emotionally about his daughter’s involvement

with us many years ago and nearly everyone had tears in their ideas as he

related her struggles with a brain tumour.

The key auction item also featured another Aussie great,

with cult figure Merv Hughes donating his time for a game of backyard cricket,

complete with a trailer jam packed full of ‘bloke stuff’ (blower vac, drill,

poolside bean bags etc)

Heartwell Director and Bunnings MD, John Gillam also donated

a management session for business, which was so hotly contested that he ended

up offering his services to the under bidder as well.

The final result for the luncheon came to over $65,000 (a

new Irvine

record) and an outstanding result for Heartwell.

Thank you to Scott McInnes from Irvine and his fellow Committee men for

putting on a wonderful day and for all those in attendance for their tremendous
